What Are The Benefits Of Having Foot Massages?

A popular form of foot therapy includes foot massages. Many people find relief at the end of a work day by having their feet gently massaged. This can be beneficial in relieving pain and discomfort the feet may have endured during the day. Additionally, it may be easier to relax and sleep after a massage has been performed, and pain may be minimized throughout the body. Before beginning a foot massage, it can be helpful to soak the feet in warm water, followed by applying massage oil on the feet and ankles. An effective method of starting this type of therapy includes performing warm up twists, which allows the feet and ankles to prepare for the remainder of the massage. If more information is needed on the benefits of having regular foot massages, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, Dr. Richard Silverstein of Union Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

How Important Is Proper Foot Care In Children?

Research has indicated when children's feet receive proper care, potential foot problems that can develop as adults may diminish. When children get into the habit of washing and drying their feet on a daily basis, foot conditions, including athlete’s foot, may be prevented. Children’s feet will benefit from walking barefoot while indoors. This helps the toes to become strong by grasping the floor. When it is time to walk outdoors, it is important to have your child’s feet properly measured. This can help to determine the correct size shoe to ensure comfortable walking. The unpleasant foot condition, known as ingrown toenails, may be prevented when the toenails are trimmed straight across the toe. Please consult with a podiatrist if you would like additional information about foot care for children.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Richard Silverstein of Union Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

How Do Ankle Sprains Occur?

Ankle sprains are considered to be a common injury to the lower leg. They can happen when the ankle suddenly twists, or lands on the ground in an unnatural way. This can occur while participating in sporting activities, or from unexpectedly stepping off of a curb. The symptoms that are commonly associated with this type of injury include severe pain and discomfort, swelling, and it is generally difficult to walk. Relief can be found when the affected foot is elevated, and this may help to diminish a portion of the swelling. A proper diagnosis typically consists of having an X-ray performed, and this is advantageous in eliminating the possibility of a fracture. An effective treatment technique can consist of wrapping the ankle in a bandage, which is often helpful in providing the support that is needed for healing. If you have sprained your ankle, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you to properly heal.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Dr. Richard Silverstein from Union Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.
